What the Cellphone Means To Me

Gen X
My mother uses the cellphone as a means of function. She uses it mainly to keep in touch with her kids, online banking, and couponing. My mother is a stay at home mom, so the cellphone allows her to get out of the house with confidence knowing that she can still get contacted if an emergency arises. With her phone she uses it to bank online. The cellphone saves her time, money, and going out in public. However functional the cellphone is, there is also the addition of security, and vice versa. My mother is late to school because she has lost her phone and feels naked in public without it.
Gen Z
The cellphone to me is a tool of communication and creation. Cellphones for my generation were huge texting communicators. To stress the importance cellphones had in communication all you have to do is look at popular models of that time; cellphones literally flipped open to a full size keyboard. I have so many stories of friends who have gotten mad at me because I didn’t text them over a break or I didn’t like their Instagram posts. And from that they question me about our friendship. I think cellphones today do as much connectivity as it does separate us. I think we as a cellphone generation have settled into an immediate gratification society and instead of working things out we work up over them. We don’t fix problems; we make more. With the iphone, creativity was fostered.
